Fransen Hostas was the destination today! We drove west through a beautiful part of The Netherlands to Ter Aar for their Hosta weekend! Open on Sunday!
The 2009 catalogue contains 1001 Hostas in the regular list and more than 500 varieties in their limited supply. Outside, the show garden has many Hostas and a few other shade loving plants planted in the full ground. A footpath leads you through this to let you see what you too can have after a few years !
Inside the nursery the Hostas are container grown and displayed in alphabetical order to make it easy(difficult?) to select. What a great way to learn about Hostas! I'm sure nobody leaves with just one plant.
"This selection contains the new introductions and Hostas that haven't been seen for a long time. These are not in the 2009 catalogue and are available for purchase after our open weekend at the end of June"
After using their website www.hostakweker.nl or www.hostaparadise.com I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted. Ofcourse some photo's are not like the real thing. Some were better and some Hostas didn't even stay on the list! There was only an empty space of the one Hosta that I really wanted. "Paradise Glory". It is a beautiful Hosta that will be by our front door. I always said that where we live is a little piece of paradise! Joyce and Marco Fransen are very helpfull. He used his bycicle to go to one of their other "greenhouse's" to find one. This is what makes shopping at a family run nursery so special, Service and heaps of knowlege. We drove home with two catalogue's and Hosta's: Fire and Ice(2), Paradise Glory, Orange Marmalade, Praying Hands, Liberty, Popcorn and the free Hosta of the month American Icon! Taking the total of Hostas in our backyard to 37 and 3 for the front yard! The answer is - there is still room!

Today through to Sunday, at SoestDijk, is the Sweet Pea display from the Sweet Pea Association. The one green house on site is filled with the fragrant flowers for the competition. With the warm weather that we hare having today and for the coming weekend I hope that the fragile flowers won't wilt!
This is a view of the building that has been the home of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernard until just a few short years ago when she passed away. It is now a museum.
There was a guided tour hosted by Groei & Bloei Baarn at 1 pm. We walked around the pond/lake and saw many of the old trees that are a part of the landscape's history. This an old Catalpa tree. See how it manages to grow and produce more branches. Mother nature is strong!
There are other flowers to see in and around the green house!
Large Gerbera's......
and Cacti!

First of all, let's all enjoy this, the longest day of the year! Summer! 21 June? Where does the time go? I once heard that the speed of how fast the days go by is relative to how old one is. What do you think? Do you agree? Something to ponder! Other Blog news and this photo: Another addition to the garden! Just when I thought the garden was ready for the summer a new wave of ideas popped into my head! This plus a few more empty places that can be filled with Hosta's. Hosta Day's at Fransen Hosta's next weekend! I've made my list!
I'm not so keen on hanging baskets for my own garden, find them lovely by others, but still I wanted something for seasonal flowering plants. The inspiration came one day when having coffee on a terrace! After a few trips to different stores to compare products and to see what was available the materials were chosen: two 90cm window boxes, two sets of window box hangers and one plank 2 m long. A weekend project was on its way. Friday the window boxes were planted, yesterday the drill bits, screws and water pass were used and today I gave the wood a coat of the same blue wood stain that you see throughout the garden. Now the geraniums can grow and flower until the first frosts of Fall!
Across town, Hosta "Pathfinder"is now part of the front garden at Buitenzorg! I came across it at the Hosta Day in Rotterdam last weekend. Bought it for the name but I think it is just as lovely! It should grow to 40 - 60 cm with lavender coloured flowers. Maybe in a few years we can split them and spread them throughout the garden!
Along the front walk 10 Heuchera's, 5 evenly spaced on each side, were planted as well. This will add colour throughout the winter months when most other plants have died off. Heuchera's grow to about 30 cm in height. Other highlights: The Roses that came from Hilversum early in the Spring are now starting to flower, Slugs/snails have been busy eating what they like, the Ginko tree lives on, The garden is maturing and changing with a few surprises and the ferns seem huge this year!
The 3 Black Currant bushes in the Fruit Triangle have berries! There might be enough for a jar of jelly or two! Next year maybe a few more! Not a sign of berries on the Red Curant bushes though. Have to research this on the internet. Could be that the plants are too young, who knows? Happy Gardening!

Look who dropped in for breakfast!

maandag 15 juni 2009

Look what we found! We went for a drive Friday after stoping at the Hosta nursery in Barneveld. It was time for coffee and a bite to eat. There was a sign giving directions to a statue/sculpture garden and restaurant in Garderen www.debeeldentuin.nl What a fun place to wander around. They have a shop full of things to decorate the house as well. Lots of room! No worries about walking into something! There were many sculptures, water fountains, vases, animals and statues outside displayed along a winding path. Couldn't leave this one behind!!
The garden is growing. Rain and warm temperatures these days! This is one poppy plant still in flower! Look at all the seed heads! I'll try chopping it off at ground level when it is all done flowering and before the frost hits to see if it will grow back next year!
There are more hosta's and heuchera's waiting to be planted!
This is a climber that was planted March 30th after the last real frosty night. It is in the two tubs in front of the shed. Maybe you can see it in the above photo.
The green container for garden waste is quickly filled. It is emptied every other Friday. Last week it was empty and now it is full! I leave the lid open on sunny days to let it dry out and maybe get more in! We have used the bin from the bicycle trailer a few times to transport clippings from the hedge. That has been done as well. No birds nests in the hedge but there is one in the bush next to it. The blackbird family is doing fine!

Impressions from the Arboretum Trompenburg

Hosta Yellow River

zaterdag 13 juni 2009

The 20 year birthday of The Netherlands Hosta Club was celebrated at the Arboretum Trompenburg in Rotterdam. The program included an opening, unnveiling the new hosta collection "Arie van Vliet Collection", Marco Fransen's presentaion about his favourite Hosta's, the Leaf Show, best new Hosta 2009 and an auction.
Here we see the judges judging the Hosta leaves.
They are all expert Hosta growers.
There were 5 catagories and best in show.
We, the participants, could bring a maximal of 25 leaves. These will stay on display during the weekend. The Arboretum has a Hosta Day planned for Sunday, including guided walks along the "Hosta walk".
The auction was fun! All Hosta's were donated. Prices started at 5 euros but soon were climbing higher. All proceeds go back into the Hosta Club. You could even bid on seedlings that are brand new Hosta's!! These haven't been grown, named and produced for the market before! The grower/developer of the best new Hosta 2009 donated a root/shoot from the one plant and that was auctioned off for 210 euro's!
The Hosta Day was enjoyable. We had sunny warm weather, time enough in the program to walk around the park, eat lunch, check out the Hosta growers "for sale" stalls and chat with other Hosta Club members. Where will it be next year?
